Grew up with trips to Grass Tracks, road racing at Alton Towers the pilgrimage to the Isle of Man, Mallory Park and Cadwell Park. Watched all the greats of the 1950's, 1960's & 1970's.

Started road racing in 1970 on 250cc Bultaco Metralla at Cadwell Park, this machine was the 1967 Earls Court show model. The bike was purchased from Frank Sisson of Hucknall (Bultaco agents, my employers at the time), through the Importers Rickman bros. of New Milton Hampshire.

Croft 1970

Added 125cc & 250cc Bultaco to the stable and raced with the Racing 50,Midland Club, Nottingham & District and National meetings in the early seventies, became Midland club 250cc Production Champion 1972 - 1973 and second in the overall Midland club championship in 1973.

1973 season

Commenced Motor Cycle Trials in 1974 on a 125cc Honda, twenty years of trialing on, 175cc Yamaha, Montesa, Bultaco325, 200 cc Seeley Honda & Fantic's.

1978 Bultac 325 ex Comerfords

Started Classic road racing with the Classic Racing Motor Cycle Club in 1987. The first meeting was at Cadwell Park with the Vintage club at Easter on the Production 250cc Bultaco Metralla. At this meeting John Reynolds had his first road race on his fathers 1937 250cc Velocette.

1987 Cadwell Park Bultaco Metralla

After many years languishing in the shed, a 200cc Bultaco was made ready for the 1988 season and commenced racing in the up to 200 class. After the usual teething troubles development progressed to enable outright wins in the 250cc class to be achieved at Cadwell Park, Three Sisters as well as numerous 200cc class wins.

196cc Bultaco 1990

The pace of development required the extra cc of a 250, after much searching a couple of basket cases were purchased and much time spent transforming into a 250cc Air Cooled 1965 Bultaco. The 250cc Bultaco was ready for the 1989 season. Once again the fragile TSS generated more than a few problems to be overcome. After much engineering work to make the bottom end reliable, the exaltation of a win in the 250cc class at a CRMC meeting made all the hard work worthwhile.

1992 Cadwell Park

The Easter CRMC 1992 Cadwell Park two day event was celebrated by the achievement of TGA Man of The Meeting. This was probably assisted by the usual Bultaco starting disease of being last away from
the grid.

Easter 1992

Due to a work injury the 1993 season was given a miss.

1992 was the first event with the International Historic Racing Organisation, this was at Donnington Park in the 350cc class.

In 1996, 1997, 1998 & 1999 had the pleasure of racing at the Dutch TT at Assen in the IHRO 350cc class, what an event.

In 1998 the race was the last race of the day, held after the modern events with around 70,000 spectators still remaining. Ten laps around the 6.094 Km / 3.76 miles circuit and to finish eighth after a long hard battle with the late Doug Jones on his 350cc manx, is a treasured memory.

Other IHRO events at the majestic Schleiz circuit in what was East Germany in 2000, 2001, 2002, Le Mans in 2001 & 2002 along with Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park and Donnington Park have given the 250 Bultaco the challenge of racing with the 350class in IHRO events.

Schleiz 2000

During 1995 a Water Cooled 250cc TSS Bultaco was built, and this has been used alongside the Air Cooled 250 especially for the hotter climates of Europe.

An extra special event to be revered was the Centennial Classic TT Assen in 1998. The 250cc Bultaco's were ridden by Eric Hinton and Phil O Brian from Australia. No words can do justice to this magnificent event where Bikes & Riders were transported back in time to the never to be forgotten halcyon days of European Road Racing.

Centennial 1998

The 250cc TSS Bultaco's used since the return to Classic road racing in 1987 are still basically as the original machines sold as, over the counter racers in the mid 1960's. The challenge of today in trying to keep them competitive against other 250cc machines brought contact with Antonio Mendes Ortiz in Spain.

Our 250 Air Cooled Bultaco

Contact was made in the quest for Pistons, pistons were required that, did not require significant operating clearance, did not break up, the crown did not sink and piston rings that retained tension. Following discussions with Antonio a visit to Italkit was organised to meet Antonio Marin Romero "ex Bultaco and Ossa works mechanic" and owner of Italkit. Italkit had developed a piston and tested it in the Spanish Classic 250cc championship. Francisco Alarcon won the championship in 2001& 2002 using the Italkit piston. Testing the Italkit piston in our Bultaco identified a quality product that removed all the problems identified above. Other products available from Italkit were, Con rods, Ignitions, Cylinders and also scooter and Moto Cross engine parts.

Italkit visit

Following visits to Italkit the agreement was reached to become the U.K. Distributor for Italkit products.
